In December 1740, six months before he first preached his most famous sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," Jonathan Edwards preached another sermon directed toward sinners, which he called "Sinners in Zion." In this earlier "sinners" sermon, he focused his attention on the unregenerate members of his congregation in Northampton. This sermon was not directed toward those outside the church but to those who were part of the visible church. Although the community had experienced recently the outpouring of the Spirit of God in a time of spiritual awakening, Edwards was convinced that many members of his congregation remained unconverted...
