Panel Presentation on: "What is the place of practical theology? Institutional and Professional Aspects”
The Association of Practical Theology
National meeting of the American Academy of Religion, Atlanta
November 22, 2003
The organizers of this symposium have asked me to address three questions. I love questions, and the wise souls who have assembled this panel have posed some very goods ones. I have been asked to address the following: 1) What have I
learned from the short experiment in doctoral studies in practical theology at the
Divinity School of the University of Chicago? 2) Why did the practical theology Ph.D. program at Chicago eventually break down? 3) What might be learned from
that experience about future teaching and scholarship in the field of practical theology? I will try to answer these questions in the following narrative.
